I use the AN1x to control both itself and an Alesis QSR ROMpler in a live context. To do this "well," essentially divide my 128 programs into AN1x, QSR, and dual programs. For any of the QSR programs, I program a blank patch into the AN1x, and just use the display to show the QSR patch name.

I program Knob 1-4 as always used by the AN1x, usually for ADSR functions. The actual functions may change -- ex: on Knob 1 can be a VCF attack on one patch, and a VCA attack on another -- but I never use these four knobs for the QSR, and I try not to mix up their functions on the AN1x. Knobs 6-8 are used for similar functions on both synths. Knob 5 is programmed to MIDI Volume (CC#7), and acts as a master volume for both synths. (I rarely touch the real volume control on the AN1x.)

Regards,
