Dear listers,
I mainly use my AN1X for techno / trance / goa which it can fill almost any part of, except for the drums (although both BD's and SD's are possible). I use it with Roland MC303, Roland D2, Yamaha DJX and Korg Trinity (for acoustic stuff). Whenever I want a thumpin' bassline, none of the other synths/romplers/softs can match the AN1X. It also has an effect-section which in my opinion is the best I've tried. The Trinity also boasts a powerful effect-loop, but I prefer the AN1X's :-).
Also, when I find THAT bass-sound on my AN1X, I like to turn cutoff all the way up (open filter) and play the upper keys for some typical but effective and penetrating lead techno sounds. The synth also has the capability to generate beautiful sounds ("Earth-Lead", anybody) for those Jean-Michel Jarre / Vangelis moments.
What I don't use it for are those few moments I indulge pop/rock stuff. When I play Jump! by VH or Final Countdown by Europe, I use my Trinity. I'm sorry, but the Jump! patch on the AN1X is nothing like the real thing. The Trinity has a patch that is. And also (forgive me, I am about to swear synthwise), but I have yet to be convinced that the AN1X is a pad's synth. Even my DJX has pads sounding better than the ones I found and tried in the files area. Suggestions to convince me otherwise are most welcome. But hey! I'm certainly no professional piano-player. Even though I know my basic notes, scores and harmonies, I most likely could make much more out of all my synths had I learned to play better and aquired more knowledge about synthesis. Oh well, those who have time are lucky :-)
Final words:
I would never, ever consider to part with my AN1X.
