Actually, evening out the volume is trickier than it seems, and I'm not sure an "auto-normalizer" would really work. I find the subjective volume of two sounds changes as the actual "stage" volume of the gear changes. The amplification used also contributes to the change. I've often spent hours on a new set of patches, getting them "perfectly balanced," then taken them to practice or a gig, and found that three or four of them stick out like sore thumbs, while another three or four get completely lost in the mix.
