Try a couple of these tips:

1. No effects-keep the sound bone dry.
2. Run the sound through a bass amp. You might want to try out a bass
P.O.D.if you're feeling rich and you don't want to lug a massive
extra amp with you. Sans Amp is also supposed to work well.
3. Keep the sustain turned way down(0-9), and fiddle with the decay
until the sound gets punchy and percussive.
4. Try turning the VCA feedback up (80s)
5. Try an outboard compressor-the 80s Boss stomp box works nice for
bass.
6. Try a single oscillator patch.

I play through a sixties Fender Bassman. I bought it used a million
years ago. Almost impossible to dial up a bad bass sound when played
through this amp.
