Dual-timbral operation only works two ways: 1) in Dual mode, with both sounds overlapped on one channel; or 2) in Split mode, on up to two channels, one of which can be the arpeggiator or sequencer. The methods are fully explained in the user manual, although it's not light reading.
Realistically, the AN1x's strength is not as a multi-timbral workstation. The dual-timbral settings are mainly useful for things like soloing over a pad or sequence, or for defining a few keys at either end of the keyboard for a special effect. Beyond that, it's really out of its league.
"Silence" and "Detroit" are good examples of the first style. (I don't remember if they came with the AN1x, or were part of the London or Dance sets or such.) I'm going to upload a patch that I made for the bridge part of Deep Purple's "Woman From Tokyo" in order to try to update our version to at least the 1990's. The top few notes provide the signature UFO-like sound, while the main body gives a techno edge to the main line of the song.
Regards,
-BW
