Did you ask it to? Or did it go off and find the old drivers? If it
went off and found it's own drivers then it could be that you are
getting a mixture of old and new drivers installed? Do you have any
system backup software? If so then a reasonable idea might be to
completely backup your boot partition (Just in case you need to get
things back) and then re-format and re-install windows? Or did you
install the card with a fresh install?

It's a pity I haven't got win2k knocking around, then I could install it
and the drivers but I waited and went for XP instead.

Hold on a mo', I've got A dual boot PC (win98&XP), I just checked in
Device manager in win98 and there are some 'extra' options that aren't
in XP.
there is a thing about joystick and sharing an IRQ with the LPT port,
were they the options you were talking about?

This is indeed strange, basically you are switching off the synths
ability to receive those types of messages.
