Mr. Acker,
I have exactley the same problems I'm using a mpu401 joystick interface & if
I power up/down my PC with the AN1X switched on, I get the same "ILLEGAL
DATA" message flashing up the only way to avoid this is by making sure I
switch the AN1X on AFTER powering up, & off BEFORE powering down.
in the meantime I'm saving for a new midi I/O, but be aware that some USB
ones can exhibit problems with large sysex dumps, & users have ezperianced
problems with ANedit.
Hope this helps

Subject: MIDI problems...HELP!
Hey all,
Over a year ago I bought a gameport-MIDI adapter for my soundcard. I
think I spent some time setting it up and finally was able to use it
partially. I remember I was able to use An1x-Edit (a GREAT help of a
program!) at least one way...I was able to change parameters on the PC and
have them affect the AN1x. I was able to send patches to the AN1x from the
PC also. I was NOT able to receive patches from the AN1x.
Here it is over a year later. We got a new PC down in the living room,
so I finally get the chance to take the old PC that I referred to above up
to the music room and hook it up premanently to the AN1x (yeah!!).
So I do.
And immidiately upon starting the AN1x I see the display flicker like
crazy...I have no contact.
I try both ways hooking up the adapter..the way I think it should be and
one other possible way (Call the first way "A" which was the MIDI cable
marked OUT connected to the IN on the An1x and the MIDI cable marked IN
connected to OUT from the An1x, and "B" which is the opposite.)
With hookup "A", immidiately at power up, even with the An1x already on
and as SOON as I hit the power button on the PC to turn it on, the LCD
display on the An1x flickers like crazy and if I hit any button or move the
selector knob I can faintly and briefly see the message "ILLEGAL DATA"
flash. If I pull out the AN1x IN cable the flickering messages go away (the
thing that flickers is the "edit" icon on the LCD) and it is just blank
there.
If I reverse the cables (please tell me it does no harm to hook MIDI up
wrong :-) I think it should not hurt anything but am not certain) none of
the above happens but I never get any contact.
NEXT: I had in meantime bought a newer soundcard (Creative Labs
Soundbolaster PCI card) and changed out the soundcard I had which was an
older Soundblaster card. I installed the drivers and am experiencing exactly
the same symptoms. The thing that bothers me most is I get the symptoms
with hookup A absolutely the second there is power to the PC. This means to
me that it probably isn't a setting anywhere UNLESS one of you tells me that
they all behave this way and that you shouldn't turn the AN1x on until the
PC is fully powered up?
I eventually had gotten some MIDI tools off the net (the PC is no hooked
up to the net anymore but from before) and one that monitors MIDI shows me
with hookup A the PC receiving "SENSE" messages about one or two per second.
I tried taking the cable out from the AN1x MIDI OUT, and moving it to THRU
in hopes of passing whatever "ILLEGAL DATA" was coming into the AN1x.
Please, has anyone got some insights, or been through this and have some
answers? It is SO frustrating when something worked before and not now. It
may be cables..I will switch the two at both ends and try method A again
now. I doubt it will help.
Any ideas, or at least insights or suggestions would really be appreciated!
Thanks,
Jim
