Bruce, thanks for some really helpful hints. I am using Win95 actually, but I see what you mean about the "Legacy" stuff...I saw that in the devices and wasn't sure what it was. Now I know that is part of the problem at least.

AS I said in another answer to Terry, the thing that puzzles me most is this "ILLEGAL DATA" message that comes all the time, it starts coming in to the AN1x just as soon as I have power on the PC.

Maybe you could help me, any of you, if you guys that have the AN1x hooked up to a PC have the AN1x already powered up, and turn on the PC after, does it flicker on the LCD screen up until Windows is loaded? Or does it flicker a short time and then stop?

And I tried even turning OFF the device ID on the An1x side expecting it to help but it didn't.

> If that's not the case, it sounds like you might have both Local On set in the AN1x and MIDI Thru Enable set in AN1xEdit.

I don't see how this could affect at start up, but maybe it could (just cause I don't see how it could doesn't mean much :-) I had Thru set to off (I mean if we are talking about the check box in the MIDI settings).

Suddenly last night when I try to start the an1x editor I get "Bad ID" in a pop up box. I wasn't getting that before, so I must have screwed something up. Am once again (fifth time's a charm eh?) installing the damn Soundblaster PCI stuff.

>This could cause multiple data messages, which would likely drive the AN1x crazy. MIDI Out from the PC always goes to MIDI In of the synth, and vice versa. It won't damage anything if you hook things up backwards, but it won't give you MIDI, either.

That is what I do now normally. I have also tried it the other way to see if that helped....it didn't.

Thanks though, this is helpful and if you think of anything more please don't hesitate to email!

I remember I was able to use An1x-Edit (a GREAT help of a program!) at least one way...I was able to change parameters on the PC and have them affect the AN1x. I was able to send patches to the AN1x from the PC also. I was NOT able to receive patches from the AN1x.

If I pull out the AN1x IN cable the flickering messages go away (the thing that flickers is the "edit" icon on the LCD) and it is just blank there.

I installed the drivers and am experiencing exactly the same symptoms. The thing that bothers me most is I get the symptoms with hookup A absolutely the second there is power to the PC. This means to me that it probably isn't a setting anywhere UNLESS one of you tells me that they all behave this way and that you shouldn't turn the AN1x on until the PC is fully powered up?

I tried taking the cable out from the AN1x MIDI OUT, and moving it to THRU in hopes of passing whatever "ILLEGAL DATA" was coming into the AN1x.
