the signiture lead sound was done with something called a 'wobbulator'
(nothing to do with fixing cars)- It was basically a bank of 16 sine
oscillators connected to a keyboard- fed to a revox type reel to reel for
echo fx. They also had another lovely device called "the crystal palace"- an
early blueprint for the 'leslie' rotating speaker cabinet?- but made of
transparent perspex- so you could watch the inner workings (oOOOOhhh I just
cream everytime I think of that!!!!)
It's worth tracking down some of the early stuff made by "Silver Apples"-
another one of Warhol's "Exploding Plastic Inevitable"-(but rather
overshadowed by the Velvet Underground I'm afraid)-a very underated band- but
Simeon used a similar device to the wobbulator- controlled by a typewriter
keyboard- producing something not dissimular to the Detroit Deep House sound-
but back in the late 60's- named aptly- "The Simeon"!
