I've been meaning to reply this thread from two weeks ago and
finally found some time. Here goes...
The simplest method to control your VSTi' s in Logic Audio is to
make the corresponding MIDI CC assignments on the AN1x
Assign Knobs for the VSTi parameters you want to alter.
1) From the UTILITIY/SETUP menu, select Ctrl Device and
choose from KNOB1-8 (or whichever mod source you prefer, i.e.,
Mod Wheel, Ribbon, etc.)
2) Use Ctrl No. to assign the MIDI CC corresponding to the VSTi
parameter(s) you wish to control from the AN1x.
The problem with this method is that Assign Knob settings re
saved Globally on the AN1x not per Voice. This means you'll
probably need to repeat this exercise everytime you switch VSTi's
in Logic or the MIDI CC assignments may not equate.
The preferred solution is to leave the AN1x Assign Knobs at their
defualt MIDI CC assignments (41-48) and use the Environment
to create an Audio Object cabled to custom faders with the
correct assignments. Many such Environment layers for popular
VSTi and hardware synths are available for free from
http://www.swiftkick.com/ There are a handful of AN1x and
PLG150 environment layers for download in the Files section too

so you can take it apart and put it back together (the preferred
method for coding Macros, IMO ;-) ha ha ha):
Donwload the freeware Muon Tau VSTi
http://www.muon-software.com/home/home.htmlIn Logic Audio a created a layer named MUON and then added
an Audio Object to that layer.
Assign the MUON Tau to the Insert of the Audio Object.
Now create 8 custom faders and assigned MIDI CC's 41-48 to
the input of each fader and MIDI CC's 65-72 to the output of each
fader.
Cable the faders serially one to the next.
Then select ALL eight faders and create a Macro which will
'bundle' all eight items into one object.
Cable the output of the Macro to the Audio Object tp which you
inserted MUON Tau.
Now, any time you assign your MUON layer to a track in the
Arrange window you will, by default, be able to use the AN1x
Assign Knobs to control your VSTi parameters without any further
adjustments.
Okay, all that said - I've not yet upgraded to LogicAudio v5 so I
can't comment on the improved automation and how it relates to
VSTi's and the AN1x. The above method is standard fare for
Logic v4.x.x and earlier.
No matter what hardware controller you use (AN1x, Peavey
PC1600x, Phat24) you're going to need to come to terms with
MIDI CC messages. I suggest 1) you read chapter 5 of the Logic
manual and 2) download the free intro to the Environment PDFs
from Swiftkick.com
