Peter is at his parents' place in the Netherlands, on the eve of going
back home to Malta, but...
I think this place is as good as the EX5Tech forum (which is excellent in
its own right) for asking about the EX series. Actually, this forum
covers all Yamaha AN synths - and that includes the EX series, even
though AN is but a small part of the architecture.
The next part should go into the FAQ. A search for 'EX5' on this forum
would pop up a couple of helpful mails as well (most of them from me :) ).
The similarities and differences of the EX and the AN1x:
∗ EX has one duophonic layer or two monophonic layers (onr fifth of AN1x)
∗ EX can combine AN with sample-based sounds
∗ EX has better effects engine (although the EX7 is a bit skint on that)
∗ EX has better keyboard
∗ AN structure (apart from effects) is 100% identical
∗ EX doesn't have FreeEG, but better arpeggiator and sequencer
∗ AN1xEdit doesn't know the EX, although there is an effort to convert
AN1xEdit files to EX .S1V files
∗ EX weighs more
Bottom line: they're two different instruments that complement each other
quite nicely. I have an AN1x and an EX5S, and I think they're a kick-arse
combination.
