I think Phil's got an excellent solution here for your "pot or pedal" idea.
Now, I'm personally not afraid of hacking up anything electronic, but I've
learned over the years about the difficulties you encounter doing things like
this. For instance, we're dealing with a plastic case with a lot of stenciled
graphics... it's hard to make a "pro" looking mod on a custom box.

The break-out box with cables, switches, pots and jacks would save a lot of
headaches and potential damage to your synth. If you absolutely need it on the
left side of the synth then consider using velcro on the side (you know - that
tape that has hooks on one side and loops on the other).
