Yes, one can never be too careful...
I've lost two modems within a year due to electrical storms. I've been very
fortunate: The modem has effectively acted as the fuse to my Apple G4 Mac.
It could have been disastrous. I've since invested in a lightning/surge
protector.

Well, the thing is...for me at least this is a good thing. If I am working
with certain pieces of equipment for a while (over days) I leave the wall
wart plugged in, but I have all my power coming from one power strip going
on to others. the point is, with one plug I can turn off power (after
turning off units with on/off switches) completely to the whole little
studio room.
I find this comforting when we get thunderstorms, beause people liveing near
us have lost TV sets, radios, all kinds of things in recent years in
lightning.
