hi there.
i know what you are going through... first of all the An1x is not exactly the
most straight forward synth. i have LOTS of keyboards and soft synths and
work with Synthesis a lot and i still find the An1x not easy to use. so first
of all don't feel frustrated.
Experimentaion is definately important BUT there are rules in synthesis which
are based on nature (if you're into modeling acoustic sounds) and on sounds
and effects in Electronic music that proved to be working and effective.

I think you shoud try listening to a specific sound that you like from a CD
or something, and try to immitate it by producing it on you AN card. when you
do that, then you will understand when it is a good idea to use cetain
filters or envelopes and modulators.. soon enough when you will hear a sound
you will automatically know what is the fundamentals...which waveform, what
sort envelopes, modulators etc...

i think that after doing that fr a while you will start getting a feel of
what every parameter is doing...then the idea of experimentation comes to
play. the beauty of mixed analog and FM synthesis is the possibilities! FM is
very rich and with the addition of analog modeling sounds can become very
intense.

don't forget that the Effects are very important in sound building also...
the An1x sounds rather thin without effects on it, some may say that it is
because it is not real analog. try to add some effects to fatten the sounds.

don't forget that you can detune osc. to make them richer...some people tend
to overlook that.

hope this helps.
