Welcome to the list,
I'm using a desktop Power Mac G3 upgraded (and overclocked ;-) with a
450 MHz G3 ZIF chip, 192 MB RAM, a TurboMax ATA/33 PCI card w/ Maxtor
Diamond Max 20 GB HD, an Echo Gina Sound Card along with a pair of
SCSI peripherals on a chain with my Ensoniq sampler. MIDI Software &
Hardware of choice had been Opcode Vision DSP & Opcode MIDI
Interfaces - along with Bias Peak SE for sample editing and an
assortment of softsynths. Switched to Emagic Logic Audio this past year
- can't cost justify a new MIDI Interface right now but if one becomes
necessary then it will be Emagic.

I know a couple of PC fellows from this list and other lists who had
taken the G4 plunge this past year. One went with an entirely MOTU
set-up - Digi Performer, Unisyn, a 2408 audio interface, and a Fastlane
MIDI Interface. The other went the Emagic route - Logic Audio,
SoundDiver, AMT8, etc.

I'd suggest you think through what you might want to run on a new Mac
and sit in on those mailing lists which are relevant for a few weeks.
There are Emagic and Steingberg lists here at eGroups with VERY large
archives that you can search through - this is not an uncommon topic.
I'm pretty impressed with how much PowerMac $1500 will buy these days
but it's still a lot of money. Know what you can afford before you
jump in head first. If you're running an app today that you think you
might want to stick with - check out the crossgrade costs. Same applies
for switching from one vendor to another. I know that MOTU, Steinberg,
and Emagic offer price incentives to switch from the competitions
products to their own. That's how I switched from Opcode to Emagic
products.

In a nutshell: decide what you want to run first and THEN decide on
the hardware in a configuration sufficient to accomodate your needs,
i.e., RAM, hard drive capacity, back-up media, etc.

One last, thing: MW Expo is about to take place week after next. Prices
∗just∗ dropped on the current models so expect further discounts on
Mac's when the new 2001 models are announced. Check out http://
www.xlr8yourmac.com/ for some GREAT technical info and http://
www.maccentral.com/ for news & gossip.

HTH

ragrds,
Jon

p.s. - Joop, RMA prices have taken the plunge here in the U.S. - 128
MB PC100 SDRAM for $62.50 each! It might be time for me to upgrade!

p.p.s. - Peter, enjoyed your reply to this thread. CPU speed is not the
sole benchmark to measure performance.
