Hi. Currently using an Sw1000xg on my PC. I've thought about getting the
AN upgrade board, it's definitely the dance sound I'm looking for. However,
I've just come across a good second-hand AN1x which may be an alternative,
incorporating an upgrade for my small midi keyboard. Any thoughts?

Personally I would go for the AN1x keyboard in preference to the PLG150AN
board. After all the AN1x is a performance device....its got a keyboard and
knobs to play with :-)

For a quick comparison of the features check out the introduction section of
An1xEdit Help file. The main differences can be summarised as follows:-

Format:
AN1x: 61 note keyboard, 8 control knobs, 2 wheels, ribbon controller,
backlit LCD
PLG150: PLG daughter card compatible with Yamaha products featuring PLG
connector (MU100, S80, SW1000XG etc)

Sound Generation:
AN1x: AN with sync, FM algorithms
PLG150: AN with sync, FM, Cross Modulation algorithms, additional VCO Waves
and LFO routing

Timbres:
AN1x: 2 scenes (5 + 5 notes) with scene morphing. Dual and split keyboard
modes
PLG150: 1 scene (5 notes) with morphing to fixed program

Effects:
AN1x: Variation:14, EQ:1, Delay:5, Reverb:8
PLG150: Variation:1 (Amp Sim), EQ:1, Routing via effects of host device.

Memory:
An1x: 128 User voices+User Sequences (in battery backup RAM)
PLG150: 256 Presets (ROM), 128 User voices+User Sequences (NON battery
backup RAM)

So the An1x is a much more self contained, real time performance device.

However the benefit of the PLG card (apart from the extra VCO waveforms and
cross modulation algorithm) is that it can integrate (in the digital domain)
with your existing SW1000XG (i.e. you can record its output directly to disc
via the SW1K loopback path and can apply all of the host XG effects to the
sound).

So your decision should be based on whether you want a keyboard device for
performance use e.g. gigging (in which case go AN1x) or if your primary use
will be creating sequenced recordings (in which case PLG150AN may offer a
more integrated solution).

In either case I am sure you will enjoy the AN sound.

Also don't forget to grab a copy of my free An1xEdit editor and some of the
superb voice libraries available (see this lists web site for downloads).
