Incredibly expressive virtual analog synth. I've had this machine for over 6 years. Fantastic synthesizer with endless sound shaping possibilities. Hidden 'under the hood' is a super complex synthesizer with full MIDI CC control, SYSEX,. Integrates with other hardware or DAWs really well. 5 note polyphonic synth, plus 3 percussion voices on 3 separate tracks! All with pitch/gate control and more per-step. Also can be used as a sequencer for other gear 

The 4-track motion control (Free EG) feature is great. Adds organic modulation to layers that evolve over time. Only 2 other Yamaha units have this feature. Hundreds of useable preset patterns and voices, all tweakable. Well thought out live performance features, like Reverse/Roll/Gate/Skip/Forward etc.. Editing/librarian can be downloaded free online and gives you a ton of control over the sound that is not available on the module's control surface itself.

The sound is absolutely great in my ears. The four freely programmable envelopes give you unlimited modulation-capabilities! This is a great little synth. Very flexible for VA, great distortion, great filters. Good for bass/leads/etc. It's a great price, not easy to find nowadays. One of the best synths around! The "hidden features" in this thing are so cool, the manual should be read to it's fullest. Some of the heaviest grittiest bass sounds I've ever heard. The distortion feature is very usable, as well as the amp modeling, in which you can make some very heavy rhythms. This machine really excels in "real time tweaks", and is full of knobs for hands-on control? 

Note: the PLG-AN card inside this device itself is worth a lot of money as it can be used inside Yamaha's top of the range workstation synthesizers.
