Subject: Re: [AN1x] AN1X Pots

I was pretty terrible at it myself, but in this case it's hard to make worse.  Even with a replacement, you'll have to remove the old encoder.  Make sure you pick up a solder pump.  It helps a great deal.  Not the baby nose sucker thing that comes with most soldering iron kits.  I've used one like this and it's works great.  http://www.frys.com/product/6582353?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG  You don't need anyting really fancier than that.  Then hit up youtube on soldering/desoldering tips and you'll see it's all really easy.
You can't really do any damage unless you're futzing around and burning your board because of a really high voltage soldering iron.  Try not to use anything over 35 watts with circuit board work.
Once you see how big and obvious the solder points are, you can't miss.
Good luck!  I'm about 99 percent positive that this will fix your problem as the AN1X is known for this.

Yeah I noticed that about one of the malfunctioning pots. Unfortunately I'm awful at soldering and might make it worse. On the other hand I don't really have much to lose do I? Maybe I'll give it a try.

Clinton, I had the same issue on 4 of the encoders when I bought my AN1X.  My number 4 would only work when pressed down and even then the value was all over the place.
You don't need to replace anything if you have a soldering iron.  Simply re-solder your 6 encoder and that should fix it.  I don't know why but the encoders lose proper contact to the board over time.  While you're in there, do it to all the encoders.  That's what I did and it now works good as new.  I hope this helps.

Well the clean up didn't work. So I'm looking for someone to sell me their scrapped AN1X or the following part numbers NX818750 which has PN 2/5 printed in it, and NX818760 which has PN 3/5 printed on it. NX818760 is the board with the issue, but I figure while its in pieces I might as well just change both. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Clinton

It was three years ago, Clinton, and I seem to recall that supplies were low then, so I wouldn't be surprised if they're no longer available. If the clean up doesn't work, send me the part number I'll try Yamaha Canada again and see if they happen to have one left. If they do, I'll have them send it to me and then mail it to you.

Best,

Chris

Hey thanks for the responses.
So Im going to try the pot cleaner first. I was wondering if I should pull the board out to do that?

And if that doesnt work Im going to try to track down the part. I called yamahaUSA and they said its discontinued. How long ago did you order it Chris?

And lastly, does anyone know where I could look online for the parts? I have a part number and Ive typed it into google and I get to a place called partsimple.com saying they have it but there is no pictured part, so Im a little skeptical. Has anyone dealt with this site before?

Thanks in advance
