Subject: Changed the battery in my AN1X

Yesterday I changed the battery in my AN1X. The battery used is a CR2450 coin style 3 volt. The CR2450 is a little larger than the CR2032 usually found in synthesizers that have user removable batteries that are not soldered in.

First back up your data (more about this later) and disconnect the AN1X from the wall socket.

Then the process involves removing the 24 screws on the metal underside of the AN1X. Do not remove the 4 screws that attach the rubber feet to the bottom. There is a little tab which holds the battery in place. The tab is located on the side of the battery holder. Pull back the tab while prying the battery out of the holder with your fingernail.

After removing the old battery from the battery holder, slide in the new one making sure that the + side is up. Gently push down on the battery and the tab should lock it in place. Replace the metal bottom and replace the screws starting with the ones at the edges. If you do the edges first it should help with the alignment of the other screws.

If possible, you should have backed up your sound bank and your system data as everything will be lost when you remove the battery. (You can use a utility like Bome's SendSX to save the data as sysex files). When you first turn on your AN1X, it will make horrible noises because the voice AND SYSTEM DATA will have been randomized to extreme values when you removed the old battery. You can either send your backed up voice and system data back to the AN1X to fix it or you can load another bank of patches and then go through the system parameters in the bottom row of the control matrix and set the system parameters to normal values like 0 for the Master Tune offset and 0 for the transpose function, etc.

When I checked the old battery that I had removed from the AN1X, it still read as borderline good on my voltage meter but apparently my AN1X will show the "low battery" message when powering up if the battery isn't well into the good 3 volt range.
