Hi Dan, the answer is yes, yes and yes. Start by looking at the AN1X User manual in the Files Section of this Group.
Pages 19-23 describe Scenes, which is how the AN1X creates two sounds/timbres per patch, each with 5 note polyphony. Each scene can be switched in/out with the Scene1/2 switches. When both Scenes are selected, they are layered and can be morphed betweeen by the Mod Wheel. This is a continuous parameter morph, not a volume cross-fade - so you may turn up interesting sounds in mid-morph!
The Layer Mode button allows 6 modes including Split left/right of a defined key, so you could use the keyboard a single incoming MIDI channel to play two sounds, just based on key range.
Page 93 of the manual states: "Each Scene can be assigned its own MIDI channel and be played independently by incoming MIDI signals (when Layer mode is set to SPLIT/SPLIT UNISON or DUAL/DUAL UNISON)."
The only thing you don't get in respect of multi-timbrality is dual outputs - everything goes out of the stereo output pair. If it was really important to you, you could pan one Scene hard left, the other hard right, and use external effects to treat them differently, but generally they can be mixed within the AN1X, which allows you to use the onboard stereo panning, chorus, delay and reverb-type effects.
The AN1X has a very competent MIDI spec. It's not quite my idea of a desert island synth because it has no mod matrix (by which I mean, for example, modulating LFO speed with an envelope). Neither do I find editing so easy on the knob matrix, others may be very happy with it. It is still my intention to create a Behringer BCR2000 template for it one day, which will hopefully make editing a breeze.
However, a huge range of analogue synth sounds are available to it (loads to download online) - and it just sounds great. You won't regret getting one.
Enjoy!
Bill
