Subject: Re: [AN1x] OSX Support

I plan to look at it when I get time.

The basic problem is you used to have to use Plumstone (PPC) or the Mandolane SPI (Intel) to access the external MIDI devices in Java programs, but Apple "fixed" the external MIDI access so theoretically the Plumstone or Mandolane extensions are no longer needed in later OS versions and their Java run time. Mandolane SPI will no longer work on Lion and is no longer being updated. Not a problem if Apple really had fixed external MIDI device access in Java. Sadly they didn't bother with SYSEX support, which is of course essential for patch dumps in either direction.

Still, it's not just Apple. I moved to Windows 7 on my music computer and the SYSEX dumps from my EX5 (via ex.factory) have stopped working, but I managed to track that down and find a workaround for it (for some reason a MIDI Clock stream from the same synth chokes SYSEX reception in Windows 7 now). But how the heck did M$ break what has been working for ten years since the days of Windows 98!

Anyway, I plan to try and resolve the issue on Lion even if it means joining the OpenJava project and sorting out the access problem in Java myself, but I have a lot of music projects on right now so little time for programming right now.

Cheers
Derek
