Subject: Re: What external module can take a PLG150-AN daughterboard?

Hi,

If you keep an eye out on E-bay you might luck on to a cheap MU-2000ex. The
final Japan only model of the entire XG series.
It takes 3 PLG boards, but also is a fairly useful sound module and external
sound processor in its own right.
Its got something like 32meg of XG sound ROM, and you can also load 4mb of
your own samples into memory from a smartcard.
Midi files can also be played from the smartcard. This should in theory
allow you to load your own voice banks to the PLG cards, by embedding them
into midi files and playing them back. Which is what a Motif or CS6 does on
boot up.
I have'nt got that far yet though. The couple of times I have set out to
check it out, I have been wandered off into the MU's rather deluxe effects
processing capabilities, or the rather mysterious sampler section. Using XG
works is a bit of a chore too.

The main problem with this unit is the lack of English documentation- theres
none, so its strictly "try and see". If you've used another XG module, most
of it is the same.

I have a theory that the MU2000ex upgrade gave it an effects section on par
with the motif classic. There's all sorts of tasty effects including vintage
filters, flangers & phasers, and even a multi band compressor.
Reverb+Chorus+Variation+4 Insert effects+EQ- Tasty!
I have been able to load soundfonts by converting them to DLS format O using
the Awave demo. Although I have'nt been able to work out mapping etc. It
will be just a matter of tinkerage.

It was a bargan for $185. I added 2 AN cards and a Harmoniser plg, its a
fairly good rack AN1x maybe.

Cheers
Jeremy
