I should think so. There's no comparison between the performance of an
internal drive (probably SATA) and an external one (probably USB).
Many people are under the mistaken impression that USB manages 480
Mbit/s. That is its PEAK performance; sustained performance is much
lower than that.

But it's a different partition than his boot partition, so fragmentation
of the boot partition is not an issue when it comes to recording.
The best would be, obviously, to have a separate (internal) drive on a
separate controller.
