Though i can't speak for specifics (i tried googling circuit diagrams for
some popular newer synths, and as you can imagine, they're pretty well under
wraps) I can say most any device i've ripped apart recently has had the pots
on the pcb. I think in most cases you "could" change them if you had to, but
I don't know how difficult it is or if you'd damage something else in the
process. I know my evolver uses rotary no-stop encoders, so i would be near
positive they're on the pc-board, but I'd imagine moog stuff (high-end moog
stuff not the "phatty" series) would have physical pots. Just venturing a
guess.
pots are kind of a dying art..... It's cheaper and more reliable to make
things digitally controlled.
