I love my hardware (AN1X and some other misc stuff) but there are a lot of freeware vsts worth owning. I've been fiddling with this one a lot lately - it sounds awesome.
http://www.home.no/gunnare/downloads.htmyou can find a lot of good vsts and they're so much more modular. One of my major problems with hardware is it's hard to get crazy chaining effects and modulators besides your synth (and I even have korg sx-1 sampler). in the computer/vst environment you can do whatever the heck you want quickly and easily. ....but that's a different argument.
Following you guys post and looking at all the other VA's that are out there, for the pricetag on the AN1X, you should definitely get it. you'll likely end up replacing one of your other more expensive boxes. It just sounds so good comparatively. I'd say the only other thing I saw scouring the web last night was the nord wave or the alesis micron/ion. the others (and even some of the expensive ones) just seemed cheesy and thin sounding. (imho)
In conclusion (i like saying that) the AN1X has all the features of a $2K box, but costs as much as a microkorg.... how could you go wrong?
