Considered DIY synths? There are a plethora of DIY synths around.

x0xb0x for a 303 clone, some people are making/designing 808/202
drummachines and others are using the venerable SID6581/8580 chips from
C64 fame for nice DIY synths.

I myself have bought and build a nice unit called sammichSID, which is a
stereo SID synth.

Midibox is a nice project in itself btw. It isn't really that
affordable, but the community is nice, and building your own hardware
has this added sense of accomplishent :) The sequencer looks like a
killer on the midibox platform, as well as the FM and SID synths.

Take a peek over at http://www.midibox.org and http://www.ucapps.de
(this is the rather technical site of things, with the design docs,
build walk throughs, demo's etc, whereas the midibox site is more a
community driven site, wiht a forum, wiki, blogroll etc)

Cheers,
