sounds like the rom is curupted and as seeing it is a prototype model might need a new set of roms to bring it up to the latest firmware when you open up the synth se what rom version you have its usually 2 sets 1 for upper and 1 for lower se what version they are and ask yamaha whats the latest versions of rom even though the synth is out of production there should be able to provide a set of roms if not they should be able to give you a copy of the iso to burn your own

Thanks everyone for your suggestions.

I've contacted Yamaha and is waiting for their response. A minor update since my initial post:

I changed the battery - which changed nothing.
I also discovered that 7+8 (not 7+8+9) while powering up gets the machine into Test Mode, while 4+5 does some form of Factory Set! (but this just resets every sound bank to some sort of initial sound (the same for all presets).
I've managed to import some sounds from my PC - most sounds come out ok, but some sounds will be totaly off while yet another some will cause the an1x to panic. One significant thing though; even if I can store a preset the name of the preset will not be saved. The name will revert to Init00x.

There are some tips in the list archives and the Files section for disassembling an AN1x, not a hard feat by any stretch if you've the time and inclination.
