There’s something conceptually confusing me here…
MIDI is the code system for transmitting musical notes and the other
associated parameters needed to create songs. (Note tone (low, high),
length, rests, velocities (mp, p, ff, etc.), dynamics (cresendos,
decreshendos), and a few other fancies to help provide expression (hold
pedal, pitch bend and mod wheels, and as does the AN1x, knobs, ribbons and
fader pedals). It is meant to make music (or maybe we could say songs).
Voices, also known as Patches are the parameters that make one instrument
sound different than another. Low or high registers, sound created from
reed, brass, struck string, hammered string, plucked string, how long the
string is, what the string is made of, the type of wood it’s mounted to…
these are the things that make a voice.
I do realize that some synthesizers are able to save patch data as MIDI,
but this data would be in the system exclusive format… commonly known as
sysex. Now if you’d said, I found tons of free voices in sysex on the
net, I’d have 2 questions. First are they created for the AN1x? If so,
good, then we can use MIDIOX or a program like it to dump them back into
the AN1x to try them. My second question would be how do you know they’re
created for the AN1x? Not to be a party poop, but if someone wanted to be
really nasty, they could write sysex data that might not be healthy for
your little pet to be chewing on.
Look in the files section of our Yamaha group. There’s lots of excellent
patches there, almost all have been checked by me (because I’m a geek like
that) and most of them are from the excellent AN1xEdit program.

AN1x-list@yahoogroups.comSubject: [AN1x] Convert MIDIfile to AN1
I found tons of free voices on the net, in the form of
midifiles. I want to load those files into An1xedit
but this software apparently does not provide any
"import midi" feature. Is there a way to load the
sysex into an1xedit other than transmitting to the
an1x (using any midi player) and then sending
all voice data back to the computer (to an1xedit)???
Thanks,
Luc.
