Subject: Re: [AN1x] xiosynth comparison?

My first synth was an A-Station that I got in 2002 and an AN200 that
year too. Last July I got a Xiosynth so I've compared the Novations
pretty closely and am fairly familiar with the AN sound too: The
Xiosynth traces its lineage back to the A-station/K-Station but it's
more similar to the KS4/KS5 sound-engine-wise. I think the Xiosynth
sounds noticeably different than the A-Station. The Xiosynth can get
grittier thanks to the filter shape parameter but to my ear it also
can get smoother as well E.g. there's a pad called "The Mellow One"
and "80's Pad 1" that are the basic 80's warm pad sounds done very
well...nice chorusy and mellifluous. I tried and tried but could never
quite get a similar pad to sound just right on my A-Station. That
might be partially due to my programming deficiencies but I can also
tell there is a sound quality to it on the Xio that just isn't there
on the A-Station. The Xiosynth adds almost everything that I had
wished the A-Station. It sounds different enough from the AN200 that
it probably wouldn't be too redundant to have both especially
considering the prices of both being so affordable. They Xio and AN
sound good me! :)

for live use.
