just to chime in ,....i use a pair of marinare lo1176a transformers that
have an gaped iron core with a rc network ( resistor capacitor network) for
taming oscillation in higher frequencies,...and it gives a perceived compressed
signal,....i never used it with my an1x but i used it with my mixer which
has a 600 ohm output balanced,.....and it sounded almost like a nicecompressor
was on it ,.....i suppose the an1x is 600 ohm too,......i have several
xformers to give different changes in tone,....like vintage UFC, and Jensen
xformers ,...Jensens have a bigger bottom ,...

Let's speak electronics again (sorry...) !
You're right Jimmy: the old amps, effects and synths had a narrower
bandwidth than today's gear, not to mention that the frequency response
was often far from linear. Examples: spring reverbs, tube amps ...
A guy has found a simple but probably efficient way to "analogize"
(sorry again for this horror!) his V.A. synth, by wiring _audio∗_
insulation transformers between the output jacks and the PCB outputs.
See: _http://www.retrosonhttp://www.retrohtt_
(http://www.retrosonik.com/DarkMods.htm)
Because of the limited bandwidth of the transformers the harsh high
frequencies should be more or less cut down. The non- linearities in the
frequency range could cause some subtle resonances by increasing or
decreasing a bit some fixed frequencies.
I never tried this mod, but maybe i will...one day: i have the "big
brother" of his Red Sound synth, an AN1x and others... If there is
enough room left to put an audio transformer somewhere inside, why not ?
Last but not least: of course if you feel yourself unable to do this mod
cleanly, or if you cannot find the right transformers, don't do that! Or
ask a friendly electronics hobbyist to do it for you....
Don't want to have a full mailbox of "Shit, my synth is now out with
your fucking idea". First it is not exactly "mine" and now you know the
risks!!
Cheers
