Subject: Re: [AN1x] Re: Bought Used AN1x! Having Issues -- Diagnostics

As a tech, this can't be preached enough:

Unseat, unplug and disconnect everything possible - clean them - then
reconnect and test. Don't just jiggle or wiggle. Heat, corrosion and
vibration can cause a lot of strange things to happen over the years.

If this doesn't work, then it's time to tap... but first visually
inspect for bad solder joints. Then take the eraser end of a pencil and
tap all over the board while you have it powered up to see if anything
happens. This is a technique of finding bad solder connections.

It's unusual for a small section of an EPROM to fail and cause symptoms
like yours. It's usually all or nothing, therefore I'm suspicious of a
connection being compromised somewhere.

As far as copying chips is concerned:
Yamaha is no longer making any money on this unit which they obsoleted
years ago. Making copies to repair or restore existing units is like a
machinist making copies of parts of old cars when the factory no longer
supplies them.
