I used to have a cs1x and was

Never heard of this issue, very odd. You are correct in that
selecting one Scene or the other in a Voice should activate that
Scene. Specifically: does the sound not change when selecting either
Scene 1 or 2, or is it simply the LEDs do not illuminate?

The default set-up for the the Factory Voices is such that pressing
both Scene buttons simultaneously would result in both LEDs
illuminating and the Mod Wheel can be used to morphed the two
scenes. Selecting either Scene 1 or 2 would allow you to toggle
between the two independently programmed layers within a Voice.

Have you inquired of the seller whether this was his experience too?
Was it working prior to the sale or did he not realize this was an
issue when your AN1x was placd up for sale? Perhpas you could return
it after making the seller aware of your issues.

I would suggest opening up your AN1x and checking whether any of the
internal ribbon cables connecting the keyboard and controllers to
the mainboard has come loose during transit - this is not an
uncommon issue for the AN1x.

chip available?

Yes, v1.04 is the most recent, and apparently final, OS update to
the AN1x. It was released some years ago. It is available as an
EEPROM that most skilled users can install without much difficulty.

The AN1x is not equipped with the necessary FLASH ROM for a SysEx
update - this useful feature was introduced later models - the RM1x
and CS6x. The OS update will likely not correct the error you've
encountered with the Scene LEDs.

We've just had this very conversation on AN1x-list within the past
week - the details of which can be found in this thread:
