A fellow named Bas Scheffers on the DIY Matrix 1000 has used AI for good

“ Matrix - Now in Digital

Time to let the cat out of the bag about what myself and Claude have been working on for the past few months: a digital version of the Matrix 1000 and a patch editor. Here we have 3 tracks of DAW plugin Matrix running in Logic, track 35 is my real Matrix 1000 clone and to the left is my prototype running the same synth engine on a Teensy 4.1 as track 36.

The editor runs standalone as well as DAW plugin and in that form it translates midi CC to the SysEx the Matrix needs to modify parameters. So you can just automate your filter sweeps on CC 74 and the hardware Matrix will respond. (Best to be running Tauntek OS for that sort of thing!)

The digital version was created by reverse engineering the schematic and firmware, then it was fine-tuned first by me only prompting about the issues and then giving Claude access to the real hardware over MIDI and audio input so it could listen (using test patches it created) to the real response of the synth to various settings. Mind blowing stuff, really.

Obviously the digital version can do more than the hardware; more voices, custom patch storage without overwriting any memory slots, I'll probably even make it stereo soon. (keyboard spread as well as hard-panned doubling.)

All of this will be released as free open source software soon.

Excuse my cheesy faux-Italo Disco demo; I started messing around and that's where it landed!”

This will be up for a little bit via iCloud
