I honestly have no idea. I was given samples of a fast 8-bit DAC and 
fast 1Kx8 RAM (fast by 1980 standards) so I went with that.

My AoC (Area of Concentration)  was digital electronics, so I wanted an 
all-digital design (up to the DAC).

I believe the time it would take a PLL to lock over such wide frequency 
swings would be a bridge too far.  If it worked at all there would be 
audible crap while it was attempting to lock.

I have already been convinced to use a DDS if I go forward with this. I 
want to try a DDS with my waveshape RAM as the lookup table.
