Two thoughts:
1. Are 256 sample waves really necessary? I would think 32 would be more
than enough even at lower pitches, maybe 16 or even 8 once you're above
1kHz or so.
2. How about just using a VCO and a series of frequency doublers to clock
the sample memory? Or is a PLL (already proposed here) a much better
solution?
