Well you can make it harder by not using legending to indicate what 
component is what. Or you can put the idents under the components.

Then you can change the layout and make sure the service manual is not 
updated.

Or putting mains voltage stuff on main circuit board - thus making it 
dangerous to fault find.

Or you can sandwich all the boards together in one tightly fitting rack 
that you can't power up without them all in place. So you can't fault 
find any of them but the top one.

Not forgetting the old classic, fitting a multiway IDC header so that 
the cable goes right across the board blocking access to some of the 
most critical parts of the circuit.

Ah the joys of fixing old synths... :-)
