I don't think the shape is critical.  Just needs to be strong enough to
support the boards and have a slot for the boards to sit in.  Certainly 
it doesn't appear to have been made for mounting circuit boards.  Early 
Serge seem to have used a lot of surplus parts.  

Although it looks like (and is) a really cheap and nasty way of mounting
the boards, it seems to work reasonably well.  I wonder if the whole frame
flexes a bit and protects the boards from the shock of rough handling.

The most recent ones I've seen still use a very similar construction
system.
