First put the seat down...oops...I mean get an ohmmeter, set to 
appropriate scale and measuer the two outside resistances to make sure 
they are good.  With probes held to both ends gently wiggle to see if 
there is any jitter.  Some of the newer designs have real problems, 
especially after being soldered where you get intermittent contacts.  
Next pick and end and measure to the middle somehow while sweeping the 
control.  Watch again for jitter.  You should get a nice smooth 
transition within limits.  Wirewound pots obviously for instance have 
incremental jumps while carbon or conductive plastic should increment 
down at the molecular level -Bob
