If you differentiate a square wave by 
running it through a small value capacitor, you get 
one spike up and the next spike down & so on.

It might well be that with the right amount of 
amplification & also clipping by zeners, you
would get something close enough to what you want - 
if you are driving solenoids, it isn't obvious that an
exactly rectangular spike is the best thing.
