Doesn't this idea date back to the old PAiA stuff? The 8700 or 
something like that, with a 6510 MPU and a QuASH (Quad Analog Sample 
& Hold) and all that. It should be *very* easy for modern electronics 
to handle this.

As for stepping artifacts, do we need to exceed the pitch resolution 
of MIDI? (That's a question, not a challenge.)
