Hi,
I build the synthesizer exactly on this principle. 
I.e., the structure of it next:  interface (key matrix or MIDI) ->
mathematical decoder lin-expo (AVR based)-> DAC-> CV-->***--> lin VCO.
AVR and DAC - inexpensive chips.
I receive necessary 5 octaves with good tracking and stability.
