[sdiy] Cheap component modules, app notes?

Are there any application notes for sdiy online, that would help me
experiment and learn how to build synthesizer modules on my own?
Completely breadboarded from scratch.  I do know how to build modules
with PCBs, schematics, etc...  But I want to be able to do this
completely from the ground up.

I may purchase some CEM and SSM chips to experiment with.  But I'd
like to be able to use cheap and abundant parts.  The CEM and SSM
(probably obvious, and i'm sure you all know) chips look very friendly
to experimentation and application.
