I've been using the 3M foam for a couple decades now with no problems.   You
can tell this foam because its black and has an almost glossy surface.  The
stuff that has the sponge surface is bad news, goes soft/gooey or crumbles
after a few years.

Just had to scrape a lump of that out of an eprom eraser I picked up at the
swap meet.
