[sdiy] Burst Generator Tips

Hi all,
The CGS burst generator has a built in clock which
does not allow for ratchet-type effects. But it allows
you to run in an external clock signal. This signal
needs ot be a pulse or square-wave output from a VCO
or VCLFO. For example if using a Pulse VCO output, the
VCO needs to have a LFO plugged into one of the FM
jacks so that the LFO causes the frequency of the VCO
to slowly sweep up and down. With pulse waves, this
will result in pulses going from close together to far
apart and back again. This is the signal you need. By
plugging this *sweeping* clock into the burst
generator the repeats specified by the knob on the BG
will be controlled by the sweeping clock. The best use
is to set the BG for the maximum 9 repeats so you get
the most *length* from each burst. The trigger out of
the BG needs to go to an ADSR so that the ADSR repeats
with the bursts coming from the BG. This causes the
ratchet effect. Hopefully this helps to clarify things
a bit.
A second main use it to use the BG to add ghost notes
to signals. For every key hit on a keyboard, you get
1-9 extra triggers generated which can be adjusted
from very fast (i.e all the bursts in close to one
thick moment) to very slow where you can hit one key
and have the 9 bursts happen in a sequence of sorts
over about 30 seconds time. It all depends on the
clock. The internal clock works great, but to go
really slow and external clock works better. I also
use the BG to double or triple snare hits when using
my modular as a drum machine. If only set to one
repeat, you get the orginal drum sound plus the 1
repeat which can be set to lag or *swing* to a
specified time beind the original hit depending on the
setting of the internal clock. Great for Flam and
doubling effects with drums for sure.
High recommended module. I was on the fence about it,
but now that I built one I am looking for a second
one. With two, you can trigger the second from the
"end out" signal on the first to keep the party going
at 18 repeats (and with 2 separate rates WHOO HOO)
Just another great design from Ken Stone.
