I have seen hollow, tubular rivets used for that purpose in industrial 
equipment.  This probably only makes sense if the PCB is hot-air 
levelled with tin from both sides after the rivets have been inserted.  
If you have access to a wave soldering machine or a (large) solder bath 
this may work as well.
