Indeed you all seem to be correct!

Once I remembered that the MPC will automatically load a floppy if
it's in the drive when it turns on I tested that and then whacked a
few pads, sure enough it made sound just like it should.  As the sun
went down I could also begin to make out faint characters on the LCD
as well, but I was not able to get it to turn on with any DC voltage I
applied.  No wonder :)  Now just to find the proper replacement...
