I tried a 4049 in mine and I couldn't notice any difference, but perhaps 
I didn't listen hard enough. The fact that it worked surprised me enough.

In what way are they different do you think?

I love phasers and love the Smallstone best. Actually, I like my own 
Equinoxe phaser best, but I don't think its the OTA that makes them 
great. The Badstone sounds very similar to the Smallstone, which makes 
me think its the feedback network(s) and wet/dry summing node that has 
more to do with it. There's also the matter of triangle or shaped 
triangle wave LFOs too.

I had a Ibanez PT-303 for a long time, but it was too subtle for me.
