Undersampling just gives alias tones... with a fixed (even if variable)
clock you will get more
frequency shift or ring-modulator sounds.
I'd do what you planned (A/D - D/A) but with the ability to kill lower
order bits selectively.
Maybe an 8 bit input, but only a four bit output.
If you want to buy something off the shelf that does exactly this...the
Blacet/ Wiard MiniWave
is the ticket. You can make EPROM banks that map 8 bit data to
arbitrary output waveforms.
