I tell yah what, if you want a very quick lesson in grounding and signal
problems, I'd highly recommend building a phono preamp.  Seriously its a
really simple way to get a feel for the quirks of groundloops and the fun of
high gain amps with noise.  I built the Velleman RIAA preamp and power
supply one weekend and even doing it the way it "felt" right, I wound up
with a lot of troubleshooting to make it as quiet as the $10 radioshack
preamp I was trying to replace.

It was very educational.
