Ah, may be this would explain why optocoupler in the MIDI devices are 
generally mounted with the load on the collector. I have never understood 
this too, wouldn't this force you to use an extra inverter ?

So may be the explaination is for a matter of speed. Well, this is may be for 
another reason, i don't know :)

But when you say much slower, could it have an impact on audio frequencies ?

Yes it is for an experimental sensor capturing a string vibration, but that's 
another story. :)
